Demand Side Management

Demand side management refers to programmes implemented through utilities to modify consumer load profile. Energy efficiency programmes decrease energy use both during peak and off peak periods, classically without affecting the quality of service given. Peak load reduction includes interruptible load tariffs, time of use rates, direct load control and other load management programmes.

Load shape flexibility could be achieved through programmes that modify price, cycle equipment, or interruption service in response to specific modifications in power cost or resource availability. These approaches involved real time pricing and time of use rates for pricing periods in which have flexible hours. Load building programmes are designed to increase use of high effectiveness electrical equipment or shift electricity consumption to off peak from peak hours thereby raising total electricity sales.
