Degree of dysfunctional attitudes

An instructor is interested in knowing if his students are different from the general population in their degree of dysfunctional attitudes. He employs a measure called DAT to measure this construct in his students. The manual for this instrument reports the mean in normative sample of 1500 people from the general public to be 33.64 - no SD is given. His 12 students take the test and find that they have a mean score of 37.59 (SD 7.04). Evaluate the research question. -Do we use a z test or t test and please tell me why?
