Essay Question: Trace the development of spatial illusion in two-dimensional works (painting or relief sculpture) from the Late Gothic period to the Early Renaissance period. Be sure to include at least one example from the Late Gothic period and one example from the Early Renaissance period. Compare and contrast these works in terms of how each artist dealt with space. Are there other elements the artist used in the work that helped create or deny the illusion of space? In addition, discuss what was occurring in society that might have had an impact on the way artists dealt with space.
