Police professionals, like other employees, need direction, guidance, training, and reinforcement from their supervisors. Police administrators are responsible for this type of supervision, as well as for ensuring that the overall mission of the department is carried out effectively. In addition, police administrators must be adept in interpersonal skills as they interact with the public, police employees, and higher-level political figures.
Studies have shown that the leadership style of supervisors has a large effect on a police officer's success and morale. In fact, police officers will comply with demands more if their supervisors have a certain style (Schwarzwald, Koslowski, & Agassi, 2001). Knowing this, the forensic psychology professional can have an impact on the police department by working with police administrators to support the leadership traits and styles that render administrators most effective.
