Water is lost from the body by the four routes, namely kidneys (renal system), skin, lungs and intestine. Let us discuss each of these routes.

Renal loss: Normal adult kidneys excrete about 1-2 litres of urine daily. The water in this total volume is made up of two portions

1. Obligatory water excretion

2. Facultative water excretion
