Define resiliency as it relates to sexual trauma

Assignment:

We spend a lot of time talking about offenders, typologies, motivations, theories, etc. But we don't spend a lot of time examining the impact of sexual violence on the victims.

Research shows that victims of sexual trauma experience several negative impacts, including mental health issues (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression), substance abuse, interpersonal violence, criminal conduct, etc. We also know that sexual victimization is a risk factor for future sexual victimization (e.g., those who have been sexually victimized are more likely to be victimized in the future compared to those who were not sexually victimized). But some demonstrate a level of resiliency that allows them to adapt protective factors and mitigate negative outcomes. Essentially, what characteristics separate the resilient individuals from the ones without a sufficient level of resiliency?

This assignment is meant for students to examine the role of resiliency as a protective factor against negative impacts of sexual trauma.

For the purpose of this assignment, students will need to examine the following elements:

  • Define resiliency as it relates to sexual trauma.
  • Describe at least 3 risk factors or contributing factors for sexual victimization. This means - what are factors that make someone more of a risk for being victimized?
  • Describe at least 3 resiliency factors related to sexual violence. This means what factors help a victim move forward faster, heal faster, define herself as a survivor - moreso than another who does not have these factors.

Other considerations:

  • Knowing there are vast ranges of sexual violence, for the purposes of this paper, students must select a specific type of sexual assault (e.g., childhood sexual abuse, adult sexual assault, commercial sexual exploitation) and consistently address the required content elements as they relate to that specific type of sexual assault.

This is a fact-based paper, so your opinions (I think, I feel, I believe) are not appropriate.

  • Minimum 5 pages of actual content
  • APA format
  • 10 to 12-font, 1-inch margins
  • Minimum 5 outside sources
