Define a challenge in modern law enforcement

Assignment:

Ethical leadership and behavior are defiantly a challenge in modern law enforcement. There are many law enforcement officers who are faced daily with ethical challenges. Maintaining honor, integrity and loyalty both with your own beliefs and with job requirements may cause personal strain. It requires hard work and does not offer an easy way to live if you are always doing the right thing. Typically, the right thing ethically may not always be the right thing morally. An example of this is if you are an officer on patrol and you pull someone over for speeding more than 20mph over the limit, upon walking up to the window you see that it is your best friend. Ethically your friend deserves a ticket for speeding, but the officer might be inclined to release the person with a warning to maintain the relationship.

Doing the right thing one hundred percent of the time requires a full commitment and will always be harder than just doing what is easier. Cadets receive ethics training in academies to reinforce the importance of high ethical behavior and its relationship to the profession. However, because police officers are human beings chosen from the public, leaders cannot expect total absence of corruption and unethical behavior (n.d, 2015). I do believe that law enforcement officers should always be held to a higher standard, and I also believe if those standards are violated with unethical behavior, the punishments should be more severe.
