Assignment: Emergency Room Case

The data included in ED.xls records the time stamps of patient admit times at the emergency department of a large hospital over a five month period (1/1/2003-5/31/2003). For the purposes of this study, we will assume that arrival times and admit times are the same. There are three parts to the assignment. Please read each part carefully.

1. (Data Creation and Manipulation) Using the data available, create the following variables. Do not include any of these answers in your written document.

(a) Numerical variables for month, day of month, day of week, hour, and minute (note: this will create 5 more columns of data, that you need to build).

(b) A variable that reflects the inter-arrival times of patients (time in minutes between successive arrivals).

2. (Data Description) The following questions require you to describe certain aspects of the data. Do not include any of these answers in your written document.

(a) Construct a table showing the average number of patients that arrive on each day of the week.

(b) Plot the average inter-arrival times over the 24 hour period (X axis) for each day of the week (i.e. each day of the week is a separate line on a common plot).

(c) Construct a pivot table that contains the number of patients arriving by hour of day (rows) and day of week (columns).

(d) Construct two pivot tables, one that contains the average and another with the standard deviation of inter-arrival times by hour of day (rows) and day of week (columns).

3. (Analysis and Reporting) Conduct the analyses requested below and create a written document reporting your results and the discussion requested.

(a) Use the results in part 2 (and any additional analysis you need) to construct your best estimate for the average and standard deviation of hourly inter-arrival times for a randomly chosen future MONDAY. Construct a table that shows your estimates of the average inter-arrival times and standard deviation of such times across the 24 period.
