Current state of mental health and well-being

Assignment:

Current state of mental health and well-being of the current generation

A subdicipline within psychology that I believe will become increasingly important in the future is abnormal psychology. Abnormal psychology deals with mental and emotional disorder. Menta and emotional disorders affects the individual personally, socially, basically in everyday functioning. Disorders such as: personality disorders are grouped into three clusters, these being A, B, and C. Within Cluster A are the individuals with eccentric personality disorders, so called because these individuals appear strange to others (MM, 2008). Paranoid Personality Disorder: individuals interpret the actions of others as threatening. Schizoid Personality Disorder: individuals are generally detached and have a narrow range of emotional expression in social settings (MM, 2008). Schizotypal Personality Disorder: individuals are uncomfortable in relationships, perceives or thinks with distortion, and possesses strange or peculiar behaviors.

Cluster B contains dramatic personality disorder types. Individuals with these disorders tend to have emotional mood swings, distorted perceptions of self, and impulsive behaviors (MM, 2008). Antisocial Personality Disorder: individuals do not care about other people or their rights. Borderline Personality Disorder: individuals show instability in relationships, self-image, observable emotions, and impulsiveness (MM, 2008). Histrionic Personality Disorder: individuals display excessive emotionality and attention seeking, overreact to other people, and appear shallow and self-centered. Narcissistic Personality Disorder: individual has inflated view of self, need for admiration, and lack of empathy; very demanding of relationship partners (MM, 2008).

Cluster C contains the Anxious Personality Disorders. Individuals here are fearful and anxious. Avoidant Personality Disorder: socially inhibited, feels inadequate, and oversensitive to criticism (MM, 2008). Dependent Personality Disorder: individual is clingy, fearful of separation and needs to be taken care of. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: individual is a perfectionist, controlling and orderly; inflexible, closed and inefficient (MM, 2008).

All of these disorders have become more relevant within the last 10 years. What could be the increase of these disorders? Could it be due to family genetics? or stressful events or trauma created by familial atmosphere? Childhood trauma? Stressful events such as divorce, death of a loved one? For now medication and therapy is the key..

what will the future bring? Medication with no side effects? therapy that cures the individual 100% No one knows...but one thing is for sure these disorders have become more relevant!
