Traditionally introverts where seen as having problems and emotional issues. The field of psychology is now discovering that being an introvert is not a bad thing. However, American culture does values extroverts and makes introverts feel that there is something wrong with them. People are encouraged in school and the workplace to break out of their shell. American's value those who speak their mind and are the life of the party. On the other hand those who are reserved and shy are seen has a problem and are constantly being asked to change who they are. Cultures which are collectivistic have a different take on this and actually value introverts more than the extroverts. In these cultures, staying quiet and listening are behaviors which are encouraged while speaking your mind is discouraged.
