Culturally responsive and social justice-oriented counselor

Problem:

Please provide a discussion response with APA citations and references to "To be a culturally responsive and social justice-oriented counselor, one must have attributes like empathy, self-awareness, open-mindedness, and a dedication to continuing to learn. A key characteristic is called cultural humility, which implies that counselors can't know everything about a client's history or experiences and must remain open-minded to learning from their clients. Hook et al. (2013) discovered that cultural humility has the potential to improve the counseling relationship because clients feel valued and understood when counselors express genuine interest in their experiences and opinions. Self-awareness is also vital, as counselors need to be conscious of their beliefs, biases, and preconceptions so that they do not negatively impact the counseling process. Also, advocacy is a critical component of culturally responsive therapy, since counselors may need to assist in alleviating social inequities and barriers that effect clients' mental health and access to care (Ratts et al., 2016). One of the issues that may interfere with culturally sensitive therapy is implicit bias or lack of understanding of customs and ways of life different from my own. Even the best-intentioned counselors can sometimes make assumptions or misunderstand a client's perspective. Another reason is that people often feel uncomfortable discussing topics such as racial prejudice, privilege, or unequal treatment. Need Assignment Help?
