Cscl 3461as we work through the first two units of the

Response Paper assignment sheet

Length: two typed pages (500-600 words)

As we work through the first two units of the course, we will be looking specifically at monsters (Frankenstein) using novels and plays that are considered foundational to conceptualizing those phenomena, and supplementing them with brief theory pieces that give attention to multiple perspectives surrounding those concepts. How these texts conceptualize monsters and robots more generally, how they contextualize that understanding historically, and how they call on literary techniques to accomplish both, are our concerns here.

This assignment is very basic, and is focused specifically on Frankenstein (for the first response paper) After having read the novel/play, what is your response to its ideas, its general/specific approach, and its conceptualization of monsters/robots? These papers are also very informal; you should use complete sentences, but other than that, feel free to offer your unfiltered take on the texts.

If you have already recommended a reading to your friends, say so; if you are planning on locating and destroying all available copies, material and digital, of another, say that too/instead; if there are aspects that you consider particularly valuable, talk about them. Given the relative brevity of this paper, it is advisable to tackle no more than one or two aspects of the text so as to allow yourself space for deep analysis.

There are no right and wrong responses here, so long as they are ultimately rooted in a close reading of the course texts and do not lapse into personal attacks. A reminder: this is a brief paper, so do your best to keep your ideas concise enough that you can flesh them out fully and comprehensibly. There is no real need to run drafts or topics past me; as long as it is on-topic and rooted in the texts, it works for me. These papers will be evaluated in terms of their overall clarity, the incisiveness of their commentary, and the creativity of the approach that you choose to take.
