Critically think and solve engineering design problems -

Assignment Details

A company is at the start of the process of designing a new 7 storey office block to be located in Preston (England) with a single stair.

The floor to floor height is to be 3.4m with the top storey of the building at 23.8m above ground. There will be approximately 360m2 of office accommodation at each level.

The design is an initial concept and there are currently no plans available.

Your task is to review the basic concept against the recommendations of Volume 2 of Approved Document B (2013) on how to meet the functional requirements of the Building Regulations and create an A1 poster presentation highlighting the key recommendations of the guidance that apply and any obvious non-compliances. Where there are non- compliances you should discuss these and try to offer potential solutions/justification.

The poster should cover key aspects of the design and guidance including:

B1:

- Fire alarm and detection
- Estimating occupant numbers,
- Travel distance limitations
- Exit width requirements
- Stair requirements
- Disabled evacuation

B3:
- Structural fire resistance
- Compartmentation requirements

B4:?
- External fire spread via surfaces of the building
- External fire spread to neighboring buildings

B5:?
- Firefighting shaft requirements (e.g.)
- Level of fire resisting protection require.
- Ventilation requirements
- Provision of firefighting lifts
- Provision of risers.?
o Vehicle access requirements

The review should focus on the requirements of Volume 2 of Approved Document B (2013) and documents specified by ADB.
You should prepare your poster using PowerPoint and should submit your assignment electronically only as a PowerPoint file (i.e. no printed version of the poster is required).

Remember:
- You must answer the question set ?
- You must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes ?
- As you construct and present your answer, consider the assessment criteria

Learning outcomes

This assessment will test your ability to meet the learning outcomes as described in your module booklet, specifically:

1. Critically think and solve engineering design problems

2. Investigate and analyse client and user requirements, technical briefs and apply ?significant knowledge to design scenarios

3. Analyse, synthesise and evaluate relevant technological, engineering, legal, health &?safety and development factors in order to produce novel design solutions which will ?satisfy aesthetic, environmental, production and performance criteria

4. Evaluate design team provision and develop appropriate working methods
