Problem:
Part A: The following reflection will provide students with an opportunity to critically reflect on issues related to communication.
Students are asked to respond to these statements related to Communication and Growth. 'We all use language to communicate, to express ourselves, to get our ideas across, and to connect with the person to whom we are speaking. When a relationship is working, the act of communicating seems to flow relatively effortlessly. When a relationship is deteriorating, the act of communication can be as frustrating as climbing a hill of sand." Chip Rose, attorney and mediator "Communication is an essential human skill and is usually acquired rather easily. Unfortunately, for many individuals with severe disabilities, communicating can be very difficult..." "Communication is the key to learning, for much of what we learn depends on interactions with others..." June E. Downing
Questions for Reflection:
1. If you were unable to communicate effectively, how would that alter your life? What would you be 'missing'? Need Assignment Help?
2. What would make it more frustrating - to not be understood what you were communicating, or not being able to understand someone communicating to you?
3. What supports would you need to have put in place in order to be a functional member of your family, your school, your community?
Part B: Watch the following Open Future Learning mini modules. • Autism and Social Communication • Communicating Without Words
After watching the Open Future Learning videos, answer the following questions.
1. What do you think may be the result (s) if an individual is not exposed to and/or encouraged to use effective alternative or augmentative forms of communication?

3. How would AAC assist an individual to connect with his or her community?
4. What attitude(s) do you need to have when encouraging an individual to develop relationships with his or her peers, neighbors, community?
5. What barriers get in way of clear communication? Respond to the question posed in each section in a manner that is both reflective and thoughtful. As well, responses must be clearly articulated and reflect a professional voice. Careful attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar is evident
Part C: In the education system, we have learned that labels exist for children. As an example of a label could be an intellectual disability, learning disability, mild intellectual disability and many more. Page 812 of the 4th Edition of Developmental Disabilities in Ontario speaks about labels. Using the text and resources you can find on line, find out what are the benefits to labels? What are the disadvantages of labels? Reflection: What are your thoughts about the use of labels? Think critically about the whole picture and the use of labels. Consider the various perspectives.
