Creating a visual literature map

Assignment task:

You learned more about quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches to research, including some strategies for conducting a literature review and building a literature map.  In addition, the readings this week suggested where an article's literature review might be placed within the article depending on the general research approach.  You also learned several strategies to search for research articles in various forums.  As such, this discussion thread provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the importance of conducting a thorough literature review prior to conducting your own research.  Please answer the following two questions.  As in last week's discussion forum, there is not necessarily a right answer, but you should support your answers using the readings this week.

(1) Why do you think it's generally not sufficient to simply report the results of previous research efforts on a topic (i.e., why is an annotated bibliography generally not acceptable as a thorough literature review for your topic)?

(2) Creating a visual literature map can be an extremely useful strategy for organizing and relating the relevant research on your topic.  What do you think might be the advantages and disadvantages of the author including a visual literature map in the published research article?  Note: if you have encountered an example of an author including some form of visual map in a published paper, please share it with the class by providing a link or reference citation.
