Problem:
The proposed project approach is to create a program based on the results of an SLR. The program will illustrate a reentry program for incarcerated women that will incorporate the women, the correctional facilities, the communities, and all of the stakeholders. The program will highlight the need for reentry to begin during incarceration. The need for assessments to be completed by trained staff to identify each woman's needs, and for interventions to be gender-based and developed specifically for women. The program will provide trauma-informed care and identify the needs for a trauma-informed approach within the correctional facility. To create a program that truly meets their needs, it is essential to understand their experiences with trauma, mental health, and substance use. To tackle these challenges, a phased approach to reentry that starts with thorough assessments while the women are still incarcerated. This first step involves using reliable screening tools, such as the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) (Blevins et al., 2015) and the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1996), to evaluate their mental health, substance use, and trauma histories. This information will inform an individualized reentry plan that includes mental health counseling, substance use recovery, trauma treatment, housing support, and job training, all of which have been proven to improve reintegration outcomes.
