Assignment 1: Photo Collage and Analysis
Assignment objective: Your goal in this assignment is to create a photo collage and discuss the new meaning created by the collage.
Details: The photo collage may be created by hand (cut out pictures and glued together in one image) or created digitally, using PowerPoint or any application that you are comfortable using. For inspiration for your collage, please review the Unit V lesson, Unit V Discussion Board, and look at the Unit VI required reading in your textbook. Please incorporate at least three photographs into one collage. Take a photograph or save the digital work as a JPEG and upload it in the space below.
Select three photographs that have distinct themes, subjects, or moods. Cut out elements from each photograph and combine them to create a new, cohesive image. Be creative with how you arrange the elements to form a new narrative or visual statement.
Requirements:
- Use actual photographs only. Since this is our photography unit, your collage must be created from photographs (not illustrations, clipart, AI-generated images, or digitally rendered graphics). This assignment focuses on photographic images as discussed in our course materials.
- All layers must be visible in your final collage. Your work should clearly show the cut-and-paste or layered construction process; do not use blending, smoothing, or AI generation tools that hide the individual components. We should be able to see where one image ends and another begins.
- If you source photographs from the internet, you must provide complete references (including URLs) for each photograph used. Include these references at the end of your written analysis.
- Do not use AI image generation or AI blending tools to create your collage. This assignment requires you to design the collage by manually selecting, cutting, and layering photographs yourself.
For the analysis, write a short paragraph (approximately 200 words) discussing the new meaning created by the collage.
Consider the following points in your analysis:
- Original Context: Briefly describe the original context and meaning of each photograph before they were combined.
- New Interpretation: Explain how the new collage changes the meaning of the original photographs.
- Emotional and Conceptual Impact: Discuss any new emotions, concepts, or narratives that emerge from the combination of the two images.
- Visual Elements: Mention any notable visual elements (such as color, line, space, time) and design principles (such as unity, variety, balance) that contribute to the new meaning.
This assignment encourages creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation of how art can transform and reinterpret visual elements to convey new meanings.
The original, unaltered images used to create your collage must also be included with your submission.
Example
Collage Description:
- Photograph 1: A serene landscape with a calm river and lush greenery.
- Photograph 2: A bustling city street with tall buildings and crowds of people.
Collage Creation:
- The river from the landscape photo flows into the city street, blending natural and urban elements.
Paragraph Analysis:
- "The original photograph of the peaceful landscape conveys calm tranquility and the beauty of nature, while the city street photo captures the energy and bustle of urban life. By combining the two, the new collage creates variety that highlights the contrast between the natural world and human development. The river flowing through the city street introduces a sense of peace amidst the chaos, suggesting harmony between nature and urbanization. This collage alters the individual meanings of the original photos and also invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between nature and modern cities." Need Assignment Help?
Assignment 2: Journal
For this journal assignment, you will analyze graphic design examples from your daily life.
Documentation Required:
Take one photograph that shows you with three different examples of graphic design from your home, pantry, or local environment. Your examples should demonstrate multiple aspects of graphic design (typography, color, layout, imagery, symbols/logos working together). Examples include product packaging, advertisements, flyers, or menus. Avoid minimally designed items with only a simple logo or single design element.
Compare and analyze your three examples. Explain which design is most effective and why, using specific observations and vocabulary from the textbook. Discuss how each design is persuasive and visually captivating by pointing out specific visual information such as color, type, design, layout, etc., and describing how those components have been used. You can also identify unsuccessful designs and describe the ineffective qualities. You may refer to the Unit VII Lesson as an example of the level of detail your descriptions should include.
Your journal entry must be at least 450 words in length. Be sure to incorporate language, concepts, and vocabulary from the textbook in your response. At least one source must come from the CSU Online Library. The Art Appreciation LibGuide and the Developing Keywords for Library Searches tutorials are available to help you locate and select your required library source. All sources used must have citations and resources formatted in proper APA Style.
