Literacy Instruction File
Description: Literacy instructors need to be aware of and able to utilize a variety of literature and resources in instruction.
Directions: You will create and organize a literacy instruction file of literature and current research based materials that you have evaluated for utilization in developing realistic projects and problem-solving activities to promote creative thinking in K-12 settings of diverse students.
You should do the following:
1. Collect materials from multiple sources that are current, research based, and develop reading, oral language, writing, and an information intensive environment. Use research based guidelines for selecting literature/domain specific print/digital text appropriate to students' age. interests, and reading proficiency. Be sure to include a minimum of five examples from each category. A minimum of one example in each category must address literacy development of English Language Learners. The categories include:
• County adopted materials
• Instructional games
• Literacy web sites
• DVDs
• Literature-Fiction
• Literature-Non-Fiction
2. Provide a description of each resource.
• Title
• Publisher
• Cost
• Intended grade level(s)
• Intended use
3. List a minimum of three (3) research-based strategies that could be utilized with each resource suited to the interests, needs, and aptitudes of a diverse K-12 student population. These strategies should:
• Provide phonological skill development
• Provide opportunities for student extended text discussion to enhance comprehension, promote motivation, and student engagement
• Provide comprehension instruction that supports students' ability to read multiple print /digital texts and to synthesize information within, across and beyond those texts.
