It is mid-February and you are already looking forward to the summer! As the recently appointed director of a community-operated summer day camp for children ages 5-12 years, you are already busy planning for the upcoming season. Summer camp begins after the Canada day long weekend in July and runs until the end of the last week in August.
Camp Sun Ray is run out of a local Community Centre that happens to be situated next to a large park, which includes a baseball diamond and basketball court. Campers are divided into two age groups: 5-8year olds and 9-12 year olds. Daily activities are held both indoors and outdoors and include sports, scavenger hunts, crafts, stories, and games. The following table shows the historical trend in the ratio of Campers to Counselors (first two columns). The minimum age requirement to be a camp counselor is 16 years.
You yourself began working at Camp Sun Ray when you were sixteen and have been a counselor for the last five years before becoming appointed as director this year. Of the 169 counselors from last year (you were the 170th counselor), you have confirmation that 70 plan on returning for the 2017 summer season
Several large housing construction projects have been completed in the community within the past 3 years bringing a number of new families to the area with camp-age children. The final two columns of the table provide the historical trend in population growth in the community over the past 5 years and the forecast for 2017.
Since the Camp Sun Ray operates in a fairly large space, and many of the activities take place outdoors, there is flexibility in the number of campers that safely attend Camp Sun Ray in any given summer
