Counseling session lays the groundwork for future sessions

Problem:

As a student, respond to this classmate of yours, including in-text citation, references from five years

The first counseling session lays the groundwork for future sessions. Therefore, I would focus on creating a welcoming environment in which the client would feel comfortable disclosing their issues. Five communication skills that I believe are most useful include active listening, empathy, open-ended questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Active listening and empathy allow clients to feel heard and cared about. Asking open-ended questions allows clients to provide more detailed information without limiting them to only yes or no answers. Paraphrasing and summarizing allow the counselor to demonstrate that they are listening and understanding what the client is saying and organizing key points while confirming understanding (Egan & Reese, 2019).

Culture also affects which communication skills may be appropriate to use with clients. Counselors should practice cultural humility and be aware that things like communication style, display of emotion, and expectations of counseling will vary among different cultures. Showing clients that you accept their worldview while tailoring your communication style to fit their needs can help you gain their trust and build your relationship. By staying mindful of culture, counselors can make connections with clients without jumping to conclusions (Sue & Sue, 20 22). Need Assignment Help?
