We performed an oxidation of borneol using sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and needed to "extract" the reaction mixture with MTBE and then "wash" with saturated NaHCO3 (Done in a sep funnel). Could you please explain to me the purpose and what's happening when we add the MTBE and then the NaHCO3? I know it has to do something with getting rid of carboxylic acid? and then getting rid of water? Please help I'm confused.
