Problem:
Completing the self-assessment in Chapter 4 of Corey's Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions (10th edition) was eye-opening. I realized that if I'm not careful, my personal values, life experiences, and biases will unintentionally influence how I work with clients. For example, I place a high emphasis on individuality, honesty, and family harmony. While these are admirable qualities, they may inadvertently sway my judgment when clients make decisions that contradict my values. Recognizing these tendencies allows me to focus on the client's perspective rather than pushing my own. Reflecting on my attitudes toward diversity, I found I had some preconceived notions about religion and gender standards that were most likely passed down from my parents. Being aware of these biases allows me to take proactive steps, such as practicing cultural humility, seeking supervision, and continuing multicultural education, to ensure that my work is respectful and ethical.
I also considered how my values may differ from those of a client. Working with someone who has extremely different spiritual beliefs or lifestyle choices than I have, for example, may cause internal conflict. Corey (2020) emphasizes the importance of therapists managing their beliefs in order to avoid injuring clients or jeopardizing professional ethics.
