1. Vance was mentored by well known "Tiger Mom"- Amy Chuan in University but growing up at home, was a victim of severe poverty and even domestic violence. Vance may have been a certain exception to the norm, but having had both negative and positive forces in his upbringing, to what extent do you think family and the presence of someone responsible for guiding one can contribute to their outcome and future concerning upward mobility?
2. "We are neither prisoners of our economic circumstances nor lords of our cultures, able to reshape them at will" this was said by Joshua Rothman. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? With this in mind, how do you think each one of us has the individual power and ability to impact the cultures in which we are submerged in and to make a difference or is this not possible and in fact only perpetuating the cycle without group effort to commit and change problems in society?
3. Having read the New Yorker article and Hillbilly Elegy, does race and skin color seem to you as important or as much of a factor in some of today's societal issues? If so, what do you believe is in each individual's power to change this?
