Assignment task: Choose one passage in Act I, Scenes iii - v where different characters describe the same situation in very different ways. Note the scene and the context of the passage. Explain the two opposing views, including why each character views the situation in the way that he or she does. Then explain how those opposing views work together to move the play's plot forward.
For instance, you might contrast the opposing ways in which Hamlet is viewed by Ophelia and by her brother and father. Or you might choose the two different ways in which Hamlet and Claudius think about celebrating (opening of sc. iv). Also in that scene, there are contrasting views of the ghost as it appears again--Hamlet's view and the view of his friends, Horatio and Marcellus.
