Continental margins are the transition between continental crust (thicker and lower density) and oceanic crust (thinner and higher density crust that is created by plate tectonic seafloor spreading processes at mid-ocean ridges). The thickness and density differences result in an ocean depth profile in which the depth to the ocean floor increases rapidly from the continental shelf to the deep water abyssal plain in the ocean basin.
