'Consumer protection' is an outline of administration regulation which protects the benefit of consumers. For instance, a government may require businesses to reveal detailed information about products-mostly in areas where safety or public health is an matter, such as food. Consumer defense is associated to the idea of consumer privileges (that consumers have a variety of rights as consumers), and to the creation of consumer association which help customers make better choices in the marketplace.

Customer interests can also be secluded by promoting contest in the markets which indirectly and directly serve consumers, consistent with economic effectiveness, but this topic is treated in Competition law.

Consumer safety can also be asserted via non-government organizations and persons as consumer activism.
