Mutations in an immunoglobulin class of cell adhesion molecule called LI lead to a condition reminiscent of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS): additionally, low levels of alcohol interfere with LI function. Use these facts to construct a hypothesis for the molecular, cellular and developmental basis of FAS.
