Consider the following dimensions for the differential band brake of Figure 18.17, which uses a woven lining having a design value of f = 0.20. Radius of drum = 4 in., band width = 1 in., c = 9 in., a = 2 in., s = 0.5 in., and f = 270°. Find

(a) the brake torque if the maximum lining pressure is 75 psi,

(b) the corresponding actuating force F, and

(c) the values of dimension s that would cause the brake to be self-locking.
