Connecting our virtual machine to a virtual standard switch

Unit 2 Discussion

Connecting our virtual machine to a virtual standard switch (vSS) or virtual distributed switch (vDS) for communication is required in vSphere but proper configuration is also important. This ensures the settings are selected so data flows smoothly and evenly across the virtual infrastructure. Migrations are also common on virtual infrastructure for routine maintenance or outage mitigation. Thus, knowing how to configure and migrate virtual machines to and from a standard or distributed switch is critical for overall success of communications. Use the discussion board to address this overall question by targeting the following:

Discuss the major features of vSS (standard vSphere switch) and vDS (distributed vSphere switch).
Is configuration of port groups on vSS and vDS necessary for security or connectivity? Explain why or why not.
Discuss the need to migrate virtual adapters as part of a migration process from a vSS.
Please post your response in one to two full paragraphs.
