Conflict is indeed an inexorable occurrence particularly in a healthcare setting. There are various causes of conflict and these include lack of communication, difference in personalities and values, and competition between the individuals. Conflict can result in decrease in productivity and absenteeism which can eventually impact the quality care. It could also result in the individuals being emotionally infuriated when it's not resolved properly. The three types of conflict comprises of the individual, interpersonal, and intergroup/organizational conflict (Finkelman, 2016). Individual conflict is the most common conflict. It occurs when there's incompatibility between one or more role expectations; interpersonal conflict occurs between people; and intergroup/organizational conflict occurs between teams (Finkelman, 2016). Conflicts and disagreements in the healthcare setting may be viewed undesirably; however conflicts can also turn into favorable circumstances. "The common assumption about conflict is that it is destructive, and it certainly can be. There is, however, another view of conflict. It can be used to improve if changes are made to address problems related to the conflict" (Finkelman, 2016). Being exposed to a conflict in a health care setting provides an opportunity to generate new insights, it can also improve relationships, and can lead to an overall success in providing patient care.
