Conduct interviews and research the facts

One Event Told Two Ways:

Select one topic or event that would make both a good news story and an interesting feature story. The topic should be something you or someone in your social network witnessed. Conduct interviews and research the facts.

Write a newspaper article of 200 words using the facts of your topic or event.

• Apply the inverted pyramid structure.
• Craft a concise, strong headline.
• Cover the 5Ws (who, what, where, when, why) and one H (how), and write succinctly.
• Include at least one quotation.

Write a magazine article of 500 words incorporating facts with personal interest components.

• Apply the feature story or profile story structure.
• Craft an engaging title and a clever lead.
• Use an original angle and lively writing.
• Include at least two quotations.

Find or produce an image for each article that would grab readers’ attention and draw them into your stories. Crop the images as needed and add a short caption to each. Insert the images with captions into the bodies of each article.

Format both articles consistently with The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law. Be sure to cite photos and any other references.
