Discussion 1:

For this Discussion, select a type of victim. Then conduct a search to identify victim services, for that type of victim, that are available in your area. You may find it useful to utilize this week’s Learning Resources to help your search. Consider whether or not the services you select are adequate to protect and support victims.

With these thoughts in mind, select a type of victim to use for this Discussion.

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the type of victim you selected. Then describe at least two services available in your area to help protect and support that type of victim. Finally, explain whether or not the services you selected are adequate to protect and support victims.

Discussion 2:

For this Discussion, select a high-profile murder case that occurred within the past ten years. Examine the relationship between the victim and offender and consider how that relationship may have influenced the murder.

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the mE???r case you selected. Then explain the relationship between the victim and the offender. Finally, explain how the victim-offender relationship may have influenced the murder.

Be specific and provide examples to support your response with specific references to the Learning Resources and current literature.

Discussion 3:

For this Discussion, select one of the laws or policies that were inspired by a single case using the Interactive Community (Megan’s Law, Amber Alert, Adam Walsh Child Protection Safety Act, and MADD National Federal Drinking Age Act). Do not select the Matthew Shepard case. Examine the factors that led to passage of the law or policy and consider its long term impact on society.

Post by Day 4 a description of the law or policy you selected. Then describe the case that inspired the law or policy and explain how. Finally, explain how the law or policy has contributed to positive social change.

Be specific and provide examples to support your response with specific references to the Learning Resources and current literature.

Discussion 5:

Victim blaming is frequently associated with sexual assault or domestic violence; for example, people are more likely to blame the victim when the crime is rape than when the crime is robbery (Bieneck & Krahé, 2011). Victim blaming in the case of rape victims is surprisingly common. A recent study of attitudes among incoming college freshmen found that over 73% of the students agreed with the statement: “If a girl acts like a slut, sooner or later she is going to get into trouble” (McMahon, 2010).

With these thoughts in mind, review the Mike Tyson case. In 1991, boxer Mike Tyson went to trial after Desiree Washington accused him of rape. The media portrayal may have influenced public opinion in the case. Review the articles included among this week’s Learning Resources and think about the arguments put forth by both the prosecution and the defense.

Post by Day 4 your position on whether you agree more with the prosecuting attorney’s argument suggesting that the victim is blameless or with the defense attorney’s argument suggesting that the victim can be blamed for the victimization.

Discussion 6:

For this Discussion, select one of the victims in the Interactive Community. Then review your state’s compensation programs and identify services appropriate for that victim. If you do not live in the United States, review any compensation in your area of residence. Think about services not available in your state that might be beneficial for the victim. Finally, review compensation programs provided in other states to get ideas and make comparisons.

Post by Day 4 a description of the victim you selected and identify the state in which you live. Then describe services available in your state for that type of victim. Explain the degree to which you think the services are adequate. Finally, explain any services not available in your state that might be beneficial for the victim.
