Concepts of de-escalation during critical incidents

Assignment:

Unforntually there has been countless incidents that our police officers have been involved in regarding police brutality, excessive force and deadly force. Our country has been in desolation in most of our urban communities. This has been due to all the deaths and injuries subjected by the hands of police officers. Awareness to this issue has been coming to light more and more than it has been in the past. This is a perfect example of why the city of Chicago felt that "a sweeping change to its use-of-force policy, embracing the concepts of de-escalation during critical incidents and the sanctity of life" is truly needed. (Jackman, T., May 2017) With Chicago's new policy it called for the use of deadly force "only as a last resort." Police now has defined "striking a subject's head with an impact weapon and chokeholds as deadly force. (Jackman, T., May 2017)".

I do think that the policy if they are properly exercised can be effective and helpful in protecting the community. The same policy can help protect our law enforcement as well. This policy helps protect the community because it will help cut back on some of the physical force that could be used on that individual by an officer. With the policy it slightly helps lowered number of shootings that can occur due to excessive force building up and turning to deadly force. On the other hand, it can help lessen the amount of lawsuit filed against Police departments due to these offences.
