Concepts of advance oil and gas management

Assignment objectives

1. To identify the underpinning principles and concepts of advance oil and gas management in the UK energy sector.

2. To analyse and evaluate the value of these in proposing a national energy mix report.

3. To undertake some creative analysis and thinking.

In your individual assignment could you all please make sure that you:

• Identify key energy challenges in the UK/key energy sources;

• Propose solutions to key energy challenges identified;

• Examine UK energy investment-how is it going to be achieved. You all need to come up with a breakdown of the energy mix budget;

• Examine how the UK will align its future power generation with an environmentally sound energy policy;

• You also need to propose an energy mix policy/energy framework that can be adopted by the UK Government;

• In your conclusion section, you should all have a section on future of energy research

You will be expected to produce a well-researched energy mix report. Originality means that you have:

• Fully incorporated key elements of the energy mix policy and given a concrete explanation;

• Integrated both theory and practice. I would like to encourage you all to analyse the literature more critically;

• Present your assignment themes/arguments in a concise, well-reasoned way.

A quick reference to use:

What measures should be put in place to address energy mix challenges in the UK?

What might affect UK energy investment energy decisions?

What measures should be put in place to ensure value for money and maintain investment in UK?

These questions make up the Statement of Requirements (SOR) for the national energy mix policy report. You are required to develop a national energy mix policy report for submission to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on the answers you find

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF:

No single energy source holds the solution to the energy gap the UK is potentially facing. Each individual energy source has advantages and disadvantages. In a diverse energy mix – encompassing renewables, nuclear power and fossil fuel plants fitted with carbon capture and storage technology-the advantages of one energy source can help make up for the disadvantages of another. As well a diverse energy mix, closing the UK’s potential energy gap will require measures such as greater household and business energy efficiency and improved distribution and transmission infrastructure. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) forecasts that energy efficiencies will continue to offset population growth, so that we will use about the same amount of energy in 2030 as we do today. In other words, the UK will use less energy in 2030 than it did in 1970. You are required to prepare a national energy mix policy report for presentation to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Summarise your key findings into a policy document. The main deliverable for this assignment is a national energy mix policy report.
