COMPOSITION

  • Proteins = 44-76%,  Lipids = 20-53%,      Carbohydrates = 1-8%,  (Protein-Lipid ratio = 0.8 : 1 to 4 : 1)
  • Most of lipid are "Phospholipids" which are amphipathic/ amphiatic in nature.
  • Other lipids are - Sphingomyelins, Cerebrosides, gangliosides, cholesterol.
  • Sterols are more rigid than phospholipids.
  • Cholesterol present in eukaryotic membrane confer stability.
  • Proteins are generally globular.
  • Carbohydrates present in PM are oligosacccharides.
  • Carbohydrates don't occur freely.
  • Carbohydrates attached to external surface of lipids and surface proteins forming respectively glycolipids and glycoproteins.
