My study of the history of psychology has helped me understand the complexity and multidimensionality of human behavior by revealing how the discipline evolved from mechanistic models to integrative frameworks that value perception, meaning, and lived experience. Early schools such as behaviorism and cognitivism established psychology's scientific rigor but overlooked the emotional, social, and contextual dimensions of human life (Burnes & Cooke, 2013). As a result, these early approaches provided valuable methods for measurement and prediction but failed to capture the underlying motivations and contextual influences that shape how individuals behave in real-world situations. The emergence of Gestalt and Humanistic theories challenged these limitations by showing that behavior cannot be separated from personal experience or environmental context (Aanstoos, 2003; Wagemans et al., 2012). This historical understanding directly shaped the development of my research problem by highlighting an overlooked area within organizational psychology, that is, the lived experiences of employees with chronic illness, particularly those managing endometriosis, and how such experiences influence their interactions and well-being in the workplace. While much of organizational research focuses on performance metrics and job outcomes, it rarely considers how individuals construct meaning around health challenges and workplace support. Recognizing this gap, I framed my dissertation to explore how employees with endometriosis interpret organizational support and how these interpretations influence their motivation, job satisfaction, and overall well-being.
