1. Parents should help their children develop the traits that will allow them to live the best life they can. Parents are living up to this principle when they send their kids to school, and feed them nutritious food, and teach them to develop self-control. This plausible principle has interesting implications given recent technological advances. In the near future, we will probably be able to use genetic manipulation to alter an embryo's genetic traits in ways that increase their innate intelligence and impulse control. Because increased intelligence and impulse control would lead to a better life, parents should use genetic manipulation to ensure their child has these traits if this procedure is safe and available to them."
2. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure in reproductive medicine that allows doctors to test an embryo to be implanted in a woman using in-vitro fertilization to see if it is genetically predisposed to a particular medical condition. Some parents who are Deaf want to use PGD to ensure that they have a deaf child. They do it by identifying and implanting only those embryos that carry the gene for deafness.
