Part 1: My current position as a Registered Nurse on the Same Day Access Mental Health team is a prime example of working effectively on an inter-professional team, as well as working independently. This team sees Veterans who have problems that are not quite crisis level, but still need more urgent attention. We connect individuals with both organizational and community resources, assist with medication issues, and assess for imminent danger to self or others. It is my role to triage the veterans who come in to identify needs, help problem solve and often just provide a safe space to express emotions. This role also allows me to collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, other nurses, and social workers in order to make sure that the veterans needs are being met. I would like to think that I contribute positively to the team by keeping an open line of communication and for being a point of contact that others can rely on for accurate information and support.
Collaborative practice and effectiveness within an inter-professional team is dependent on each person taking on responsibility, having accountability, providing cooperation, and fostering mutual trust and respect (Bridges et al., 2021). Creating a safe and inclusive space is critical to enabling individuals to work together towards common goals, contribute openly, verbalize concerns, and participate in developing solutions. A leader who can create an inclusive environment fosters a sense of shared ownership and commitment among group members, allows for diverse perspectives to guide decision-making, and ensures that, regardless of status, all voices are heard. Part 2: To integrate the competency of inter-professional team effectiveness into my practicum experience, I have been communicating with other practitioners in the office. By learning more about their diverse backgrounds, treatment styles and practice goals, I have been able to identify ways to make sure that my program development project fits the needs of their patient population, as well as my preceptor's patient panel.
