Compelling in making the case against slavery

Write a paper from 1500 to 2000 words in length on one of the following topics:

1. Read and reflect upon the selected chapters from Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (Norton Anthology p. 767). Judging from Stowe's portrayal of slavery, with what aspect(s) of slavery do you think she was most outraged? Provide instances from the story in support of your point. Describe specific parts of the narrative which you believe are particularly compelling in making the case against slavery.

2. Read and analyze the arguments in the selection from Thomas Paine's Common Sense. (Norton Anthology p. 326). Explain how for Paine, Britain's problematic relations with other European countries weighs against the idea that it is to America's material advantage to remain under British sovereignty. Why does Paine believe that American independence is inevitable? And, if his readers agree that it is inevitable, why does he think the colonists should revolt and form a constitution immediately rather than simply wait and let things take their course?

3. In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God (Norton Anthology p. 194), Jonathan Edwards uses the terror of divine wrath to try to create a change in his audience's outlook and behavior. What is it that Edwards believes people are thinking and doing that angers God so much, and how can they escape his anger? In stressing the angry God so much, do you think Edwards is still able to convey hope that God's anger can be avoided?

Your paper should be free of spelling and grammatical errors. There is no need to send your paper in an attachment as a word-processing file. You can simply paste the text into an email and send it.

Beware of using excessively long quotes from the book. If you need to incorporate an extended passage of the book into your paper, it is far better to rephrase the idea of the passage in your own words (and give the page number of the passage you are paraphrasing) than to quote long chunks of text verbatim.
