Compare the diverse types of family structures

Problem:

Course Outcome:

Compare and contrast the diverse types of family structures and how cultural factors can influence these dynamics.

Directions:

You will compare and contrast the Parr and Pelekai families, investigating how their different family structures are shaped by cultural and social factors. Read the scenarios for the Parr and Pelekai families below, paying particular attention to family structure, socioeconomic status, communication, impact of legislation on the families, and cultural influences or aspects. Then you will write a 500-word narrative comparing and contrasting these two families, incorporating information from lecture to support your analysis. More detailed prompts are provided below.

Family Scenarios:

The Parr Family: A nuclear, middle class American family consisting of two parents, Bob and Helen, and their three children: two teens (15-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl), and a 2-year-old boy. Bob works as a life insurance agent, and Helen is a part-time fitness instructor. The family interacts through smartphones and social media. The children, especially their two teens, are active on various online platforms for both social and educational purposes. The teens have an active YouTube channel documenting their lifestyle. The Parr family values individualism, autonomy, and independence. They celebrate major American holidays like Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July with family gatherings or community outings and events. The family is also actively involved in local community services and attend Christian Sunday services regularly.  They keep a busy schedule balancing work, school, extracurricular activities, volunteering, religious gatherings, etc. The family navigates challenges related to work-life balance using stress reduction activities, such as yoga and hiking. They value quality family time during weekends, although the older children often spend time with their friends outside of the home.

Recent changes in family leave policies (FMLA) affect the Parr family. Enhanced parental leave legislation allows both Bob and Helen to spend more time at home during critical periods, such as after the birth of their child or during a family health crisis. Additionally, changes in local education laws, such as policies promoting inclusive education, have made a positive impact on the children's school experiences, allowing them to earn scholarships to attend private schools and plan for their educational future post high school.

The Pelekai Family: An upper-middle class immigrant family from India, living together in an extended household. The family includes Sanjay, an IT consultant, and his wife Anjali, a homemaker who occasionally teaches at a local community center. They have two children, an 11-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. Sanjay's parents and Anjali's' younger sister also reside with them.

Communication within the Pelekai family is primarily face-to-face, with a preference for in-person family gatherings and parties. Technology is mainly used for connecting with extended family members in India and for the children's education as needed. The older family members enjoy the use of regular mail to write letters. The family strongly values collectivism, emphasizing tight-knit bonds, respect for elders and an adherence to traditional customs. They celebrate festivals like Diwali and Holi with great enthusiasm and regularly participate in events at the local temple and within the cultural community.

The family has been affected by immigration policies and visa regulations, impacting their sense of security and plans for the future. Anjali's parents, who are aging and in need of more constant care, have been trying to immigrate to the USA. Anjali feels a strong duty to take care of them as head of their family. However, new immigration policies have made it increasingly difficult to bring over family members who are not working and cannot enter the country on work visas. This situation has caused considerable stress and anxiety within their family, as they try to navigate the complexities of the immigration system. Although these changes have created increased stress, they have brought the family closer together as they support each other through these uncertain times.

The family navigates a blend of traditional and modern lifestyles. Elders in the family share stories and cultural values with the younger generations. They face challenges in balancing cultural preservation, norms, and customs with adaptation to American society. Cultural values are very important and emphasize collectivism, strong family bonds, respect for elders, following traditional customs, and education for their children.
