On completing this module, the student will be able to -
1. Compare between rail and road in practical situations and suggest the appropriate mode of transportation.
2. Calculate all different kind of ETO's related to rail/road plus storage.
Assignment Objective: Aim of the Assignment is to check if students understand the ETO related to rail and storage. The students will be checked their understanding on the calculation of train requirements. It also assists in checking the understanding of the practical situations in the modes of transportations.
Assignment Tasks:
1. You want to transport 100.000 tons of granulate from Muscat to Salalah.
The product has a S.G. of 0, 4
The internal measures of the 30ft containers are:
Length: 29'6"
Width: 8'1"
Height: 9'2"
Occupation degree is 95%
Weight of the container is 3 tons.
Max. Payload of the container is 32 tons.
Max. Weight of the train is 1800 tons.
Length of the train is not relevant.
We will use 4-axle SGNS wagons with a tare of 20 tons each.
The capacity of a SGNS wagon is 60ft.

2. There is a consignment of 100 000 tonnes of soda ash light from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to Salalah in Oman. There are two options to be considered: Rail and Road and Road. Answer the following sections:

b) Explain five advantages and five disadvantages for choosing that mode of transport giving practical examples.
