Compare and contrast the storm metaphor and storm imagery

In this assignment, you will write a multi-paragraph essay where you choose two of the works we have read in this unit and explain both how they are similar and how they are different in their approach to a common theme or metaphor. As usual, you should consider the question you choose to respond to (from the prompts below) your thesis question. Your answer to this question will be considered your thesis, and your thesis paragraph will introduce the main idea of your paper. In the supporting paragraphs, you will draw the reader's attention to examples from the poem and the story that support your thesis. You will be expected to use quotes from the text and to format and punctuate those quotes appropriately.

Topic -

The poems and stories we have discussed in this unit have explored the concept of love and desire. Write an essay on one of the topics below:

  • Compare and contrast the storm metaphor and storm imagery in Dickinson's "Wild Nights!" and Chopin's "The Storm." Consider how is desire expressed in each of these works.
  • Compare and contrast the speaker's attitudes towards sex in Glück's "Mock Orange" and John Donne's "The Flea." Consider such things as the two poems' situations and the metaphors used.
  • Compare and contrast the situation in Shakespeare's "That Time of Year" with the situation in Tallent's "No One's a Mystery." Consider the idea of maturity, idealism, and age difference in these works.

Special expectations for this assignment

As we've discussed in class, I want you to focus on crafting a clear thesis statement, using topic sentences to draw the reader's attention back to your thesis at the beginning of each paragraph, and paragraph unity.

Be sure that your quotes are relevant to what it is you're trying to explain and that you provide context for the quote as well as your interpretation of what the quote means. Quotes should appear in "quote sandwiches" and be correctly punctuated and formatted.
