Compare and contrast functionalist theory and conflict

Compare and contrast functionalist theory and conflict theory in their approaches to understanding race-related issues in the United States.

Topic 4 DQ 1

The functionalist perspective on racial issues views the racial and ethical differences as a social dysfunction that gives one group (the dominate group) social power over a lesser group. But it can also view racism as a dysfunction or a plus because it can form bonds between people in certain minority groups.

" Functionalist theory argues that for race and ethnic relations to be functional and thus contribute to the harmonious conduct and stability of society, racial and ethnic minorities must assimilate into that society" (Macionis).

Conflict theory would concentrate more on which gender, social class, race, ethnicity is being discriminated against. For example, conflict theory would say something like "in order to stop racism one would need to lessen the divide between social classes."

Karl Maxx actually believed some forms of inequality are good for a society. I would assume this is because it gives one the drive to want more, and expect more from themselves.
