ASSESSMENT TASK: EDITORIAL

Learning outcomes - Apply independent ethical judgement and initiative in solving business problems for differing audiences using clear and fluent written communication

DESCRIPTION

The print media are not unbiased and present different points of view. You are required to research a business issue which will be given to you by your lecturer and write two editorials (maximum 500 word count for each editorial), one for The Australian and one for The Financial Review. Each paper has a different audience and is owned by different stakeholders. The papers therefore have different concerns and points of view. You will be expected to write each editorial giving regard to these differences.

Editorial Task

This task builds on the previous task as it moves from your own experiences to consider the impact of business decisions from differing perspectives and then write a cohesive argument to support others' points of view rather than your own. It is also designed to improve your business research skills. Researching differing companies is an important skill for a manager of a business. This task will require you to research a particular problem on the web in sufficient detail to be able to discuss the problem from differing points of view. If you consider differing stakeholders and the impact that the problem will have on them, you will more easily be able to construct different cohesive discussions.

The following task is actually more difficult than it sounds because of the limited word count that you are given. Within the limited word count, you are required to mount a lucid and convincing argument about the topic from two points of view. Remember these are different points of view and therefore should have a different expected outcome. Also note, that since there are two different expected outcomes, there are different discussions that lead to that outcome.

This is an academic piece, with a different format. Hence in text citations are not required, however (and this is important) you must include a bibliography. A bibliography includes all places where you have found information about the topic, even if you have not included any specific information in your work.

The problem:

The Federal Government, before the Christmas Break, has announced a Royal Commission into the finance sector. Comment on the impact that the Royal Commission may have on the Commonwealth Bank. Remember that this subject is called "Corporate Governance and Responsibility". You should be approaching the topic from this perspective.

Referencing should be in APA style
