The Great Escape (United Artists, 1963) is a dramatization of the actual events in which 76 Allied prisoners escaped from Stalag Luft 3 in 1944. Artistic license is taken in the use of composite characters, compression of events, and matters such as the motorcycle scenes for Hilts (Steve McQueen), but for the most part the movie gives a reasonably accurate portrayal of what happened.
