Review the following and critically answer the questions illustrated below:

Study 1: Learner proficiency and focus on form during collaborative dialogue by Michael J. Leeser

Study 2: Raising the linguistic accuracy level of advanced L2 writers with written corrective feedback by John Bitchener and Ute Knoch

In 4-5 pages (12-point Times New Roman font, NOT single spaced), describe and critically evaluate the two studies and explain which one is more convincing.

Some more details:

You do not have to go through and list ALL the parts of each of the studies. By now you should know what the parts of a research study are…right? You are all graduate students, so you have flexibility with this assignment. For those of you who need more structure, here is a suggested format (of course, variations of this are possible):

1. Briefly describe and summarize study #1.

2. Briefly describe and summarize study #2.

3. Compare and contrast the studies, here you can go into details by pointing out the differences in methodology, contexts, findings, implications, etc. You may wish to point out problems, things that went unanswered, ethical issues, sample sizes, and so on.

4. Explain which study you found more convincing (or more useful, relevant, etc.) and why.

Note: The main point here is to see how different researchers looked at the same (or a similar) issue. This doesn’t mean that one study is “bad” and one is “good.” It’s to see which one you found slightly more convincing or perhaps more “useful” or “relevant” for your purposes. We want to avoid taking a dismissive attitude toward research—so avoid approaching this assignment with the attitude that one study must be “brilliant” and one must be “terrible.” You may find studies (and parts of studies) have various degrees of usefulness, but you should be conscious of why you arrived at that determination.
