Based on my experience as a paraprofessional and youth development instructor, one classroom management strategy that really works is not giving too much attention to small behaviors when they're not disruptive or major. Sometimes ignoring minor attention-seeking behavior can help it fade on its own without escalating the situation. Another strategy that works well is calmly and respectfully speaking to the student one-on-one. When you address behavior in a calm tone instead of reacting emotionally or publicly calling them out, students are usually more receptive and willing to correct their behavior. I also think a big part of effective classroom management is building positive relationships with students. When students feel seen, respected, and genuinely cared about, they tend to behave better and engage more. In that sense, a school counselor can play a really important role by promoting positivity, connection, and a sense of belonging within the school. That support of feeling connected can help students feel like they matter, which can directly impact their behavior and choices in the classroom (Wilkens et al, 2023). On the other hand, strategies that don't tend to work as well are reacting too quickly or harshly in the moment, which can sometimes escalate the behavior instead of calming it down.
