Purpose: When a law is broken in the U.S. the type of offense, where it occurred, the level of the crime and the age of the offender determines the potential range of punishment imposed on the offender(s). That is not always the case in other countries or when one of our citizens breaks the law abroad, or their citizens break our laws while on our soil. This assignment explores your understanding of the major crime trends in the U.S. and globally, and the differences between U.S. and global crime and punishment.

Instructions: Address the following: Pick two different countries on separate continents. For EACH country AND the U.S. answer the following.

? Explain how the U.S. and each of your chosen countries classifies crimes for the purposes of punishments. Use examples.

? For each of your chosen countries and the U.S., explain the possible punishments for these current crime trends: mass murder, possession of drugs and opioids, identity theft, armed robbery, cybercrime and terrorism. Use examples.

? Discuss how the above crimes have increased or decreased over time in the U.S. and your chosen countries and why.

? Discuss what happens if a resident of one of your chosen countries commits the crimes mentioned above in the U.S. Conversely, discuss what happens when a U.S. citizen commits these crimes in your chosen countries.
