Classical russian films in all genres

The question is in two parts as followed:

1) Essay Film
2) Film External Links

Section I:

Essay: Film

Please find the links to classical Russian films in all genres in the External Links section. I want everyone to watch at least three full-time films, or one longer series, or many shorts like cartoons. You can concentrate either on one genre (like comedy) or look at how Russian life is presented in different genres and different times in the history of Russian cinema. I want you to look both at representations of Russian life and how cinematographers seek to represent it for the purposes of their art.

Questions:

1) I encourage you to read all the comments and descriptions on YouTube and make sure you understand when the film was made and what was going on in Russia at that time. Please always refer to particular periods, don't assume "Soviet period" was always the same.

2) As with photos, write down your observations of power and authority, gender roles, family and work relations, and class issues as well as emotions, humor and bitterness. What does cinema tell us about how people used to live in Russia?

3) How is Russian cinema different from other national cinematic traditions that you are familiar with?

Please also use these questions to do my Essay too; all that you think go with my essay

• What was the intention standing behind the creation of these works of art?
• What kind of issues did the authors want to draw attention to?
• What kind of images or broader picture did the authors seek to produce and what kind of expressive means did they use to achieve this goal?
• What kind of reaction was expected on the part of implied audience?
• Does this genre have any unique tasks, opportunities and specifics as related to other genres of Russian arts and to corresponding genre in other cultures you are familiar with?
• What kind of cultural stereotypes portrayed and what kind of expressive means used by the authors did strike you, grab your attention or make you see Russian and your own cultures in a different way?
• How do the issues analyzed in your essays relate to our class readings and discussions?

Film Essay External Links:

The biggest collection of classical Russian movies with English subtitles can be found if you search YouTube website using keywords "PyccoTypucmo" and "birubir." The account of the person who used these two nicknames has been deleted, but you still can watch many of the movies that he uploaded, although you can't see them all posted on one page any longer. He is an amateur enthusiast who takes pleasure in creating subtitles for the famous Russian movies so that people who don't speak Russian could watch and enjoy them too. I suggest that you always read the film descriptions if they are provided, as they contain a lot of valuable information. This collection is your primary source.

Same user also has accounts on other video hosting services, were he posts more of Russian movies, both with and without English subtitles:
