Cinnamic aldehyde ( a fragrance compound) can be made by base catalysed aldol condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde.the feeds are contacted with sodium hydroxide in a stirred tank reactor. The product is neutralised and washed with water to remove salt. The washed product is usually separated by batch distillation, in which unreached feeds are recovered first,followed by product, and a polymeric waste is left as residue. The batch distillation product can be further purified by vacuum distillation. Sketch a block flow diagram of the process.
